Stop #1 for some of you, stop #90-something for the tour itself: the July box comes from the canton of Uri.
The brewery that started in a bakery
Stiär Biär began with Max Herger and Mario Muther brewing by hand in the back of Herger’s bakery in Uri. The tastings went so well that in September 2005 it was registered as Switzerland’s 212th brewery — and with that, Uri had its own beer again for the first time in roughly 110 years, since the canton’s last two breweries closed in the 1890s.
In 2008 the hobby became the Kleinbrauerei Stiär Biär AG, and the brewery moved into a building on Moosbadweg in Altdorf with proper beer history of its own: it was built in 1866 as a brewhouse by Vinzenz Reiser, innkeeper of the Gasthaus Ochsen. Beer is being brewed there again — with Urner mountain water, under the sign of the canton’s bull.

- Äs Nesslä — the curiosity of the box: a nettle beer
- Äs Hopfigs — the IPA, for the hop-forward finish
